Smash Journal and Michael's Review

Good Monday morning all my bloggy friends!  How are you today????  Things are great here in Beckyville.  After a week home from work, between snow days and a sick Landry, I'm headed back to the office today.  I have mixed feelings about this but you can be sure my brain will be thinking about all things crafty during each spare moment I get!

Have you seen this video?  I saw it last week on Michelle Wooderson's blog and fell in love with it! Abie watched the video with me and she fell in love too!  The only problem is, this doesn't come out until April.  Boo!  What's a girl to do?

I think my favorite part of the video is the beginning when they show the composition book and the sketch book that people were using as idea books.  One looked like an idea book for a wedding.  Wouldn't that be a cool wedding planner?  Well, I went to Michael's and bought two of these:

They were buy one get one free too!  One for me and one for Abie :)  Then I did this to it....

Abie has already started filling hers up.  Talk about making me happy!  She was rifling through all her desk drawers and pulled out the lunchbox notes (some of them last year!) cards, pictures and all sorts of treasures to put in her book.  She set up shop in the living room Saturday night with her glue stick and went to town.  I meant to get pics of hers, I'll try to do that this week.  I plan on using mine for more of an idea book with sketches and inspiration from magazines.  You know, the other thing that has me worried about the "real" SMASH book, I wonder how much it's going to cost.  This sketch book was $6.99 (remember, I got 2 for that price otherwise I would have used a coupon) and I got the decorate the outside how I wanted.

So, what do you guys think of these SMASH journals?  Will you buy one when they come out or will you make your own or will you not have anything to do with it at all?  :)  I think I'll wait to see how much the "real" one costs and if they're cheap enough, I might buy one for a special project.

Okay, quick Michael's review.  I went Friday AND Saturday.  It was overload for my crafty senses and it took two days for everything to soak in.  (I'm lying, Landry was with me Friday and she was ready to GET OUT OF THERE, so I didn't have time to look at everything I wanted to.  Ha!)  It was great!  I loved it!   I'm so excited to have one so close.  My only complaint.....the dollar bins are (you knew it would be about the dollar bins) are in the check out line.  Just like Joann's.  I feel so....exposed when I'm looking for my $1 bargains.  Creepy.

I hope you have a great Monday!  Thanks for stopping in today and I'll talk you all later :)

  1. The Smash books are great - this kind of thing has been popular with art journalers for a long time, but this makes it look simpler and more accessible. I love the cover you made for your book! I hope someday you post pages from inside.

  2. I noticed all the buzz the smash books got at CHA. I've heard the prices will be reasonable, but don't know actual prices. I love the idea but not sure I'd like it in practice. I'm working on a project life type project and I've been saving the reciepts and bits in divided page protectors. I like that they are displayed better. I'm not sure I could just be at peace with putting stuff in the smash book randomly. It really would just need to be an inspriation type thing. I love your idea - just make your own! Keep us updated with your progress! I'd love to see how you are using it.

  3. mmm looks interesting. i will take a look but probably pass. who knows--love yours.

how fun to sit with your little one and make this. Jack likes to do a bit of crafting with me but i doubt he would be interested in this--who know--we did make a binder for him to put his "special papers" in it. who knows!

hope you get back into your routine.

  4. I saw that same video and thought that is was a cool idea, I do have a $1 spot journal that I use to keep my ideas in, but if it gets too bulky, then I don't like it so much, I do like the spiral, but will probably just make my own. Love yours by the way!!

  6. I like your book. While I love the idea of smash books, I probably would never use one. I am not a person who writes in journals and such. I try, but usually quit after a week or so.

  7. I used to make books like this all the time in college. I have attempted to start a book a few time since then but end up getting too busy. I need to get back to it! Thanks for the inspiration.

  8. I love your books! There is no reason to spend the big bucks when you can do it for so much cheaper, and your kids will appreciate it more too!

  9. Love your book!!!! The best thing though is that Abie is loving it and so excited and spending creative time with mommy.
I am thrifty and would definately go your way and get my own book. I do like the pen/glue stick, that is neat.
If I was to do one, everything would have to straight and centered. I wish I could go out of my comfort zone.
Looks like a fun and freeing project.
Looking forward to seeing both yours and Abie's pages.

  11. Your ideas are so fun, tfs! II love the smash book idea, but I really can't think of anything I'd need one for LOL If I do come up with something, I'd probably just make one myself.

  12. I really want the journal, it's $13 ( though some places may have a 40% coupon, like beverly's) I was inspired by the books at the begging of it too!

  13. I've been doing this for years, but using sketchbooks. There is a whole yahoo community called "gluebooks" that I also am part of. I have several big sketchbooks, and I just glue in ideas, clippings, memorabilia, etc as the things come up. I like the pen/glue tool but I just use a gluestick and some markers.

  14. I grabbed a smash book yesterday after shopping around for an alternate book I could use. (I had a coupon for 30% off) so the smash book only cost $10 which is comparable to the cost of other journals once you count the pen which has a dual function of writing and glue. Plus the pages of the smash book are cardstock weight.

I am experiencing a lot of changes this summer and am looking forward to documenting them in the journal!
